What Does the Transmission Do?
The transmission in your vehicle is used to make sure the right amount of power and torque is supplied to the wheels at a given speed. It works similarly to a multi-speed bicycle. When starting from a stop, you want to start with a low gear. If you are starting from a high gear, it will be difficult to get the vehicle moving. The transmission reduces the higher engine speed to a slower wheel speed and increasing torque in the process.
Signs It's Time for Bentley Transmission Repair
There are many signs the transmission in your Bentley needs to be repaired. Using the bicycle analogy again, if the chains are off, the bicycle won't be able to go. So if your vehicle's transmission is failing, it will have difficulties moving. Here are some signs that your transmission might need to be serviced or repaired:
- Struggling to stay in or change gear: This could mean
low transmission fluid because of a leak, the shifter, cable or something in the valve body
of the automatic transmission.
- Delayed or missed gears: Another sign of low transmission
fluid or the wrong kind of fluid is used.
- Transmission slipping or high engine revs: This could
also mean low transmission fluid but other factors could also attribute to this. The high
engine revs could mean the clutch is worn or other parts of the transmission is failing.
- Leaking transmission fluid: As you can tell by now, low
transmission can cause a number of issues. If you see red fluid underneath your vehicle,
this is generally a sign that the transmission fluid is leaking.
- Burning smell: If the fluid is low, this can cause the
clutch to burn and emit a burning smell
- Odd noises when changing gears: If you odd noises when
the transmission is changing gears, this is a symptom of bad bearing or damage to gears.
- No power: If the engine is running fine but the vehicle
has little or no power, this could indicate an internal problem with the transmission. The
computer could be limiting power to prevent further damage to the engine
- Gears grinding (Manual transmission): This typically
happens when the clutch is not releasing, shift synchronizer rings is worn or broken, or
wear and adjustment problem to the shifter. Low transmission fluid can also be a cause of
gears grinding
- Clutch pedal grabs very low or high (Manual transmission):
This is usually a problem with the linkage or hydraulic system that operates the clutch.
The clutch disc and pressure plate might be failing and need to be replaced.
Types of Transmissions
Manual Transmission
A manual tranimssion is very similar to a bicycle's gear shifter. When changing gear, the engine and
the transmission temporarily disconnect just like the chains on the bicycle. This is done by pushing
the clutch pedal down. When you have shifted to the desired gear, you release or disengage the
clutch and your car will begin moving in the new gear.
Automatic Transmission
An automatic transmission is essentially an automatic shifter. It changes gears for you automatically
rather than having the driver manually shift the gears and pushing on the clutch. Just like manual
transmission, you want to shift to higher gears as you climb in speed. A vehicle in low gear will
struggle to bring itself to higher speed otherwise. The automatic transmission utilizes the torque
converter which senses these changes when you accelerate and shifts to a higher gear for you. The
same process works for slowing down.
Dual-Clutch Transmission
To put it simply, a dual-clutch transmission combines the advantages of both automatic and manual transmission by using different clutches for
odd and even gears. When the vehicle is changing gear, the torque is transferred from one gear to the
other continuously to provide a gentle smooth gear change without losing power or causing the
vehicle to jerk. The driver also has the option to change gear manually using paddles on their steering wheel or let the vehicle handle it automatically
Continuously Variable Transmission
The continuously variable transmission (CVT) is a type of automatic transmission that senses the
accelerator input with the engine load and shifts to the desired speed or torque gear ratio
automatically. This provides continuous uninterrupted power within a specified range of speed and
torque ratios. The CVT allows the driver or a computer to select the relationship between the speed
of the engine and the speed of the wheels within a continuous range. This can provide even better
fuel economy if the engine constantly runs at a single speed.
